Welcome to Physician’s Life Centers!
Physician’s Life Centers is a unique and innovative place where you can learn about the reasons why you would want to improve your lifestyle and show you how to do it. What is Lifestyle medicine?(click to learn more) Why Lifestyle Medicine? Here is a great fact to begin this conversation: 80% of chronic illness are due to poor lifestyle habits. In the United States today almost 70% of the population are overweight or obese, with 1/3 of that number clinically obese. It is well established that obesity and overweight are both related to diabetes, heart disease, cancer and many more diseases that we accept as part of the aging process. That is simply not true. Nutrition and fitness play a vital role in your health and your habits are what drives you to eat well, or not, or exercise or not. It is said that your genes control you and that you cannot effect the genes that you have. In essence, your genes are your destiny. This is a false statement as well. We now know that your lifestyle habits, especially your nutrition and environment directly effect how your genes are expressed. Of course, it is a bit more complicated but the message is that you can help yourself by eating a more nutritious diet and exercise more regularly. My practice will focus on your habits and help you understand how you can take charge of your own life. Stop dieting and start living. Decide what is really important to you and set goals that you can reach that can improve your life and even affect those around you.
Total Wellness If you had to sum up the practice of Lifestyle medicine you would have to say Total Wellness. That is what I do. I look at each person, individually and come up with your plan for total wellness. The evaluation will include us sitting down and talking about what you want and what your goals are. Medical records will be reviewed, tests may be ordered. Nutrition and fitness will be discussed. From that information your plan for total wellness will be created and discussed with you.
How are wellness and lifestyle related? Lifestyle medicine is the natural way to approach your health. It is evidence-based and includes nutrition, physical activity, stress reduction, environmental factors, and your social support network. How you live your life has everything to do with your health. It is our habits that change the balance of our health positively or negatively. Most of the diseases that you can think of such as type II diabetes, cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, obesity, and even cancers are directly linked to lifestyle behaviors. Simply put your lifestyle dictates how “well” you are. The best part about this is that we can always improve our lifestyle habits to live a better life. Lifestyle medicine addresses the underlying causes of these diseases and focuses on prevention and even reversal. A common thread for many diseases is a process called inflammation which is when your body decides to attack itself. Why does this happen? Toxins in your environment, in your food, or even stress can set off a series of events that causes your body to attack itself. Once this happens your body reacts by sending out its troops to clean up the mess. Those two events, attacking and reacting, wind up being a loop that keeps repeating itself and this directly leads to chronic illness. With lifestyle medicine you can help yourself by helping your body heal naturally.
Getting started That first step towards true health can be difficult. When you’re bombarded every day by media telling you what to eat, what not to eat, what supplements to take, what classes to take… well you get the picture, it is just plain impossible to make a decision. I was in a similar situation where I found myself overworked, overstressed, and overweight. I didn’t know what to do either. This is the reason why I am so passionate about helping you define and reach your health goals. It is said that empathy is when you walk a mile in someone else’s shoes. I have walked hundreds of miles and I add that experience, the highs and lows, to my extensive and expanding education so that I can guide you in your journey to true health and wellness.
OUR PRACTICE Lifestyle is a major contributing factor to most of the common diseases that affect us. Inactivity and poor diet are 2 things that are in your direct control and put you in the drivers seat for your own health. Blending medical knowledge from training in conventional medicine, gastroenterology, metabolic medicine and cooking and combining it with evidence-based science is what gives Physician’s Life Centers a unique perspective in helping you achieve true health. Under the direction of Dr. Corey Howard, Physician’s Life Centers can help you improve your health by offering you real wellness and prevention plans that are individualized to your needs. An essential part of the center includes a yoga studio where we can combine mindfulness training and apply it to your habits to improve them. In addition, a kitchen facility is available to show you how to combine nutrients into amazing healthful and simple meals. The center will focus on helping you define and set your goals and show you how you can achieve them.
